City trip: Learning more about the history of Berlin - 12-08-2010
When I was in Prague a few weeks ago, we spent most of our time with shopping and relaxing. We barely visited museums or any other historic venue. Last week I went to Berlin, and this is the perfect place to learn more about the second world war and the separation of west and east Germany. The city is full of fascinating places which memorize these events from the past.
Instead of going there by aircraft, we used the train for transportation. From Hengelo (the Netherlands) to Berlin Hauptbahnhof, it takes about 6 hours. The trip to Berlin was quite relaxed, the trip back home was a nightmare (due to very noisy children). We used an intercity train instead of a high speed connection, so there were some issues about our reserved seats.

City trip to Prague, a short getaway - 21-07-2010
Last week I went to Prague. My sister and I decided to go on a short city trip to a place we both never visited. A few months ago, we booked this trip at the local travel agency. We flew with KLM Cityhopper, the short distance division of KLM. At KLM Cityhopper they use relatively small aircraft to operate the flights, like the Fokker 70/100 and the Embraer 170. I never flew with the Cityhopper division in the past, so it was good to try it. I hoped we would fly with one of the (brand)new Embraer jets, but unfortunately the flights to Prague are operated with a Fokker 70.

End of the schoolyear, and the final decision - 29-06-2010
The schoolyear started with an internship at the KLM, and ended with 16 weeks of classes and exams. A few months ago I wrote about my wish to go back to an IT related study, as I thought that aviation didn't fit very well. Usually I'm quite good at making decisions, thinking about the pro's and the cons, but this time it took nearly half a year to make the decision. Why? Because this decision might have a huge impact on my future career.
I was accepted at both the Hogeschool Windesheim and the Hogeschool Utrecht by making an 21+ exam. I could start with one of those studies in September. At a certain point, I was convinced that I would stop my aviation study and start all over at an IT class.

Video: Welcome to the OCC, KLM?s Operations Control Center - 17-05-2010
While searching on the Internet for some aviation pictures. I came across this video. I found it quite interesting as I was working at the Loadcontrol department within the KLM OCC during my last internship. Many aspects of this video are in some way related to what I learn at college.

Tracking statistics of QR codes, soon available on CreateQR - 14-05-2010
Now createqr.com is online for about a month, offering a free service for generating various kinds of QR codes, it's time for something new. I'm currently very busy with the pro version, which has some nice features.
On pro, it's all about statistics. QR codes a more valuable when you know how many visitors it delivers to your website. You could create a landing page where the code is linking to, and track the statistics from there, but if you don't have the know-how, or you like things to be as effortless as possible, this might be the easy solution for you.

Generate QR codes online: CreateQR.com - 09-04-2010
Today I launched the website of my latest project: An online generator for QR codes. With QR codes you can close the gap between the offline and online use of your products. Recently I printed new business cards with a QR code on its back. Just scan the code and your mobile phone will open my website. More and more people are using mobile Internet, and with that growth going on, QR codes will become more useful.

Starting all over: Building a web desktop application - 24-03-2010
I love the concept of web desktops or in short, webtops. At first having access to your files from any desirable location is great, but many other services offer this feature. But working in an environment that has the look and feel of your desktop computer fascinates me, like I wrote a while ago.
The last year I've been working on my Luna project, lately I've been looking at the code I wrote for this application and I think it has to be better. As I don't feel much for cleaning up the code the current project I decided to start all over again, and doing it the right way at once.

Quick fix: Acer Aspire One battery not charging - 12-02-2010
After not using my Acer Aspire One netbook for a couple of months I needed it again for school. It didn't boot, as the battery was completely discharged. I tried recharging the battery but that didn't work. Even after a couple of hours charging, the battery indicator in the task bar still said it was charged for 0%. It seemed to be a problem with its BIOS, the netbook simply didn't recognize its battery anymore.

PHP script for generating QR codes with the Google Chart API - 17-01-2010
As I'm convinced that it's just a matter of time before QR (Quick Response) codes are a standard in our daily lives, I played around a bit. I found out that Google added QR codes to their Chart API, and wrote a little piece of code.

Changing my goals, going back to IT - 16-01-2010
It's been pulling on me for quite a while now, and a couple of months ago I made my decision. Aviation isn't what I want to do for the rest of my career. It actually is very confusing as I love being at an airport, I love aircraft and everything that comes with it.

Check your network traffic with Netcounter for Android - 03-01-2010
Last week I received a text message from my operator that I've used 80% of my network traffic on my mobile phone. I was quite surprised as I never got such a warning before in the two years that I've been using mobile Internet. As it's very expensive to use more traffic than included in my contract I searched for a simple application to help me keep track of my current usage.

Exploring the Android SDK and generating QR-codes - 28-12-2009
After over a year suffering from my LG Viewty, which has really been a waste of money, I finally have a new phone: the HTC Hero. For some people it might not be enough, but I'm very satisfied about it. One of the main reasons I chose for this phone is its Operating System, Google Android.

UserCake: PHP User Management System - 06-11-2009
If you are building a web application or website, there's a big chance you want your visitors to register for certain features, and to login to visit user-only pages. Instead of writing your own code for this, you can also choose to use open source and free user management systems from the web.

Working on Weight & Balance - 26-10-2009
At the end of last summer, when the new school year started, I began my internship at KLM loadcontrol. This essential department of KLM's operation is accommodated in the Operations Control Center of the KLM at Schiphol East. Together with the other trainees the internship started with a training of two weeks, to learn the principles of loadcontrolling and to work with the software.

Using a desktop as an interface for web applications - 05-10-2009
While developing websites and web based applications you always have to try to make a product that is easy to use, and at the same time has a slick, stylish look. Any user has to be able to work with it, whether it's an IT-professional or someone who only uses the computer at his office and doesn't have any more skills than text processing. I've written before that it would really help to use an interface similar to the desktop of Windows or Mac, as the user is already familiar with it.

Yellowbird: The 360 degrees video experience - 22-09-2009
Recently a Dutch company based in Groningen presented their new video technique for capturing 3D video. The viewer of the videos is in complete control of what he wants to see. During the recording a Google Streetview alike camera records anything that happens, 360 degrees around the camera. The videos that are captured are processed by a bunch of powerful computers which compile it to one video. The viewer can watch the video in any direction.

Last week I went on a mini cruise to York (England) with my father and stepmom. I didn't went on vacation this summer so we decided to go on a small holiday of three days. I've been in England several times now, getting there with all possible ways of transportation like by airplane and high speed train. This time I went by boat, and it was pretty comfortable.

How to: Watch ABC, NBC and Fox TV streams from outside the USA - 02-08-2009
On the websites of major United States television channels you can watch full episodes of their most popular TV shows and series. If you would like to watch episodes of Heroes, Knight Rider or Ugly Betty, and living outside the US, you'll get a message that you are not allowed to watch and the video player doesn't show a thing. When an episode is broadcasted in the US, it takes months before it finally arrives in Europe. If you cannot wait that long, this might be the solution.

Design background patterns in a few clicks online - 10-07-2009
Instead of using just one plain color or a photo as a background on a website or blog, designers use patterns very often. You can see it on this weblog as well, a dark background with a light and calm pattern.
There are hundreds of free patterns available on the internet to use for your projects, but if you use these, there is a slight chance that they don't suffice your needs because you didn't design them yourself.

How to: Remove the Mootools code from Joomla - 29-06-2009
I'm currently busy with building a website for a local culture event. In the past I've made other websites for this customer, and they are all running on Joomla. Because the customer now knows how to work with this software I decided to use it for this website as well. I'm using jQuery and Thickbox to show the pages within the website on a dynamic way, but there happened to be a problem with this.

2nd school year is over, let the summer begin! - 19-06-2009
The last weeks were busy, but now the summer holiday begins and I'll be free for more than one and a half month. The school year finished with an exam week, with 9 exams about the subject material of the preceding eight weeks. During the week before last one we've also had 3 exams and a presentation. Just like the other exam weeks this year I've been incredibly busy with studying, and the results are quite satisfying.

Amsterdam Airport Fire Brigade demonstrates the Firefly - 30-05-2009
Last week's Thursday I went to the Airport Fire Brigade at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol with college. Our teacher promised us to go there a while ago, and now we finally got the opportunity to learn more about the prevention and protection against fires at the airport. The fire department at Schiphol is situated at three different locations on the airport. Each location is responsible for its own area. In case of an air crash or

Synchronizing data between two or more PC?s - 24-05-2009
Recently I bought a Netbook from Acer. Because its so small and light it's easy to take it with me to college and while traveling by train. The only drawback was that when I edited or created files I had to transfer them manually to my other laptop with an USB stick. It would be a lot easier if these files got synchronized automatically between these computers.

Terschelling ?ander land travel guide has been released - 15-05-2009
On July the 1st, last year, my father and stepmother released their book 'Ameland ander land', a comprehensive travel guide about the Dutch island Ameland. It turned out to be successful and they decided to make a similar travel guide about one of the other islands: 'Terschelling'. After months of work this book was released yesterday. My father and stepmother went to the island for one month to collect information, to interview local citizens and to write most of the texts. The design has been made by the same company as the first book, Fennart.

The first steps in creating a Web OS - 30-04-2009
Being able to access your calendar, contacts and files wherever you are makes your online and offline life easier. Services like google calendar and esnips give you the ability to do this, but you still have to be a member of multiple services at the same time.
